The Awards and Scholarships Committee administers the William D. Postell, Sr. Professional Development Award, the Mayo Drake Student Scholarship Award, the Distinguished Service Award, and the Librarian of the Year Award. William D. Postell, Sr. Professional Development Award This award partially or completely covers registration fees for an SCC/MLA member to enroll in a continuing education course or workshop. Applicants should demonstrate how this course or workshop will offer preparation for future professional responsibilities, provide a unique opportunity not normally experienced by SCC/MLA members, and serve to benefit SCC/MLA colleagues. A total of $1500.00 will be available to fund SCC/MLA members’ continuing education experiences this year. To qualify, applicants must be SCC members with an MLS (or equivalent) and work in a professional position. Applicants who have received an award within the last 3 years are ineligible. Applications must be received at least 15 days prior to the date of the intended course or workshop. An application for the William D. Previous Recipients of the Postell Award Mayo Drake Student Scholarship Award This scholarship enables eligible library science students to attend the SCC/MLA annual meeting. Applicants should be contemplating careers in medical librarianship. Applicants must be enrolled in or accepted for admission to an ALA-accredited graduate library school. (See the Directory of Accredited LIS Master’s Programs for address and accreditation information.) Applicants must be either residents or attending graduate school in one of the following states: Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, or Texas. Application deadline September 1. Previous Recipients of the Mayo Drake Award The Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding service to SCC/MLA. Recipients are selected on the basis of their contributions in measurable ways to Chapter achievement and effectiveness. The Librarian of the Year Award given for the first time in 2006, recognizes a mid-career librarian for outstanding contributions in health sciences librarianship. Criteria used to determine the recipients of the award include, but are not limited to, leadership in the profession, scholarship/publications/research, teaching/training/mentoring, professional activities, service to the health profession, and development of special projects. The nominees' achievements in the areas described above must have occurred within the last 2-3 years culminating within the last 12 months. The recipient must be a current member of SCC/MLA.
