Plenary Sessions

The Gut-Brain-Library Axis: Rocking Wellness with Evidence and Microbes
Oleg Karadutta, MD
SUNDAY Oct. 26th 4:30 – 6:00 PM

In the high-demand world of knowledge work, cognitive clarity and emotional resilience are essential—but often overlooked. This keynote explores the fascinating connection between gut health, mental performance, and burnout, grounded in the latest microbiome science and evidence-based strategies. From dietary shifts to decision-making frameworks, we'll examine how librarians can protect their well-being without the fluff. Get ready to rethink self-care—not as indulgence, but as precision-tuned maintenance for doing what you love, sustainably.

The American Spa: A Medical History of Hot Springs, Arkansas
Tim Nutt, MLIS
MONDAY Oct. 27th Noon – 1:00 PM

For centuries, Hot Springs, Arkansas has been renowned for its thermal waters. The U.S. Government recognized the importance of the springs, designating it as a reservation in 1832, thus protecting the area, while utilizing the medicinal waters as treatment for illnesses, ranging from arthritis to polio, syphilis, and tuberculosis. The varied history of Hot Springs will be discussed, including the work of Dr. O.C. Wenger, who operated the first federally run venereal disease clinic, the use of the Army-Navy Hospital, and the establishment of public bathhouses.

Building Resilient Librarians: Strategies for Sustainable Health
Robert Hopkins, MD
MONDAY Oct. 27th 4:30 – 6:00 PM

Librarians serve as an important source for information for their communities. If these individuals are to have sustained health and be there for the people that need their help in the Library, maintaining their own health is important. In this session, we will review recommendations on finding and assessing a primary care clinician and evidence-based recommendations for primary and preventive care in adults.

From Nerve to Nourish: Understanding Pain Through Neuroscience, Self-Care, and Harm Reduction
Leah Tobey-Moore, PT, DPT, MBA
TUESDAY Oct. 28th 3:30 – 5:00 PM

This session introduces foundational concepts in pain neuroscience education, emphasizing how the brain and nervous system contribute to chronic pain. Attendees will explore multidisciplinary strategies, including interventional procedures, physical therapy, and behavioral health, to improve function, self-efficacy, and quality of life. The session also covers prevention and self-management tools such as ergonomics, movement, and mental wellness for building resilience. Finally, it addresses harm reduction and the role of naloxone education in opioid safety. Librarians will gain a compassionate, evidence-based framework to better understand pain and support access to inclusive health resources in their communities.
